WARNING! WARNING! THE CALIGARI DEMO REQUIRES A MINIMUM OF ONE MEGABYTE
OF RAM TO WORK!
15 Sept 88
Hi. Here is a ZOO file which when decompressed and correctly copied
onto a stripped Workbench disk will give you the equivalent of the $18
Caligari Demo Disk sold by Octree Software.
This software is Copyright 1988 Octree Software Inc. and is NOT in the
public domain. If you redistribute, please keep the entire ZOO file
intact, but feel free to put this on any BBS or service you like - Roman
Ormandy, President of Octree has requested that this demo be distributed
far and wide.
Now, to turn this ZOO file into a working Caligari Demo Disk is relatively
easy if you keep your wits about you and follow along with the
bouncing ball....
I have chosen to use ZOO rather than ARC since ZOO has the capability to
use long filenames and maintain full directory trees and their contents.
ARC would have forced me to rename files and build a long execute.me type
file to put everything back where it belongs. That sounds too much like
work :-)
You'll find the ZOO program (latest version: 2.00) in the AmigaZone library
on People/Link and on better BBSes everywhere. Get it, you'll need it.
Okay...here's how to make your Caligari Demo Disk:
1) Diskcopy a standard virgin Workbench 1.2 disk. Put your original away
and use the copy only for the following.
2) Remove (delete) at least 330K worth from the Workbench. Get rid of all the
demos, utilities, system drawers, get rid of preferences program, clock,
notepad and all of that. Delete all the fonts from the fonts directory.
You need to free up at least 300K of space. Don't touch the L: or LIBS:
directories. Caligari will need things in there to run properly.
3) Now assume the following:
a) you have downloaded CALIGARIDEMO.ZOO to your RAM: disk and that's
where it is right now.
b) you have the stripped Workbench 1.2 disk in DF1:
c) you have typed CD DF1: so your current directory is DF1:
4) Okay, you're ready. type this at your CLI:
ZOO E// RAM:CALIGARIDEMO
The "E//" command is the trick. ZOO will look at the RAMdisk, find the
.ZOO file, and extract it to DF1: and rebuild the necessary subdirectories
that Caligari wants.
(in the above, substitute the appropriate drive names if you have a DF2:
instead of a DF1: or you downloaded to VD0: or VDK: or RAD: instead of
to RAM:.)
The disk as I received it from Octree software has the following directory
structure so if you somehow mess up you can manually put the files in
their correct directories so long as it ends up looking like this:
c (dir)
Assign avail
cd Copy
Delete dir
Echo Else
EndCLI EndIf
FailAt format

MAKE *SURE* YOUR NEW DISK HAS THE S/STARTUP-SEQUENCE FILE FROM THIS ZOO
FILE, NOT THE ORIGINAL WORKBENCH STARTUP-SEQUENCE. THIS IS EXTREMELY
IMPORTANT IF YOU WILL BE RUNNING THE CALIGARI DEMO BY REBOOTING ON ITS
DISK. THE NEW DEMO DISK MUST ALSO BE "INSTALLED" SO IT WILL BE BOOTABLE.
IF YOU DISKCOPY A VIRGIN WORKBENCH DISK AS I SUGGESTED ABOVE THEN THE
STRIPPED COPY WILL ALSO BE BOOTABLE, SO, AS PAUL HOGAN WOULD SAY,
"NO WORRIES, MATE!"
--------------------
Got it? Okay good. Now you'll find the documentation (which I typed in
from the sheet that came from Octree with the demo disk) in another file
in the ZOO called "README.SECOND" and you should read it. It will help
you to understand how this demo works.
The demo is fully functional. Everything except for "save" and "print"
works.
If you wish more information on Caligari or an ordering form and Caligari
brochure, you should contact:
Octree Software Inc.

NOTES FROM THE DEMO DISK DOCUMENTATION:
The Caligari Demonstration Disk includes a complete (unabbreviated) version
of the program. (You just downloaded it!). This version will not, however,
allow the user to save work.
The Caligari Software Prerelease includes the Object Modeller, Scene
Composer, a separate text based Script Module, and the Rendering Module.
The prerelease also includes a manual, object library, phone support,
and newsletter subscriptions. Please allow from four to six weeks for
softwar delivery.
A simplified version of Caligari will be published by Electronic Arts
for the home market. This version will not include animation capabilities
and other professional features and accordingly will be lower priced.
Caligari runs on a basic Amiga PC 500/1000/2000 with a minimum of 1MB
of memory. 2-4 MB is strongly recommended.
Caligari software prerelease: $1995.00
Octree will provide for a limited time a 50% discount on Caligari
to any user group in the US if at least 5 orders are made.

README.FIRST and README.SECOND and disk rebuilding instructions by
Harv Laser, Plink: CBM*HARV, Chairman of the AmigaZone.
Since I spent a couple hours of my life putting this ZOO together and
writing these docs, I'd appreciate it if you didn't rip my name out of
this text if you redistribute the ZOO file elsewhere.
